About

This wordpress was set up to help deliver and provide predominately ‘older’ software (pre-2005) to the public (you guys!). Most software that is posted here is (under my understanding) either shareware, freeware or open-source.

I may upload the odd piece of software that does not come under these categories – and if you, a representative of the company/the author of the product, I will happily take down the product.

I will not post any key’s, or cracks, or any incriminating software like such here. Please use this if you are wanting to look for those.

I try to keep the types of software posted here varied, from basic common programs like QuickTime and Acrobat Reader, to old-skool web browsers to home-brew MS-DOS games.

Most of the stuff available are sourced from the following:

  • Demo Discs (Given away with PC magazines or newspapers)
  • Compilation Discs (Such as 1000 Arcade Games)
  • Official Websites
  • Old Game CD-ROM’s
  • Driver Utility Discs (On this note may I stress that I WILL not upload or ‘locate’ any specific drivers for you, once again you this for that)

I usually run & install the software before uploading; just to check if it is working (if not, I will usually state so in the description). Of course working with ‘old’ software I am unable to test the majority of software (mainly the games) on my main OS of choice, Windows 7 64-Bit, so most are run through VMWare Workstation, which is a fabulous piece of kit! Followers, subscribers and fans will notice I use Windows 2000 Professional a lot in my screenshots, and this is my OS of choice when it comes to ‘testing’ software; although I will at times have to use Windows XP. If the software/game is designed with DOS (i.e. MS DOS 7) in mind, then I will run it through the emulation program DOSBox, if I have had to do this I usually state in the description “Running in DOSBox”.

The software listings are quite simple. It begins with a description which is a short paragraph on the software, containing small amounts of trivia, other information like authors and developers, what the software is, if it’s a custom version (i.e. the NTL branded version of Terapin FTP is an example of this). I may also include a short review of the software here, which may be as short as a one-liner comment or a few sentences of a general summary.

After that comes a screenshot, which is an uncompressed image hosted at ImageShack which is resized for the post, but once clicked upon, will open a ‘larger’ version (when applicable, old DOS games whose native resolution is 640×480 are unlikely to change).

Below this is the “warez info” which is a list of common properties all the software on there should ‘share’. Full name is the full name of the product (i.e. Terapin FTP Browser v2.3.1 (NTL Branded) instead of just NTL Terapin Browser) – this is usually here to help searching more than anything. Install/Standalone means does the software require an install (using an installer, not an extraction!) or is it free-standing. The Warez Type is just my general guess of what I would class it as, I try to keep these ‘maintained’ to simple categories, but they are not always pin-point correct, if you feel it should be amended, please comment on the post! Source is where it came from, if the CD-ROM was a commercial release I will include the catalogue number in parentheses. Working properly is to tell you if it works as it should (from what I’ve tested that is, which at times is not very long at all), if there are any faults, or if it’s dead. I also include a date for reference, but please note that this means it worked on the OS I tested it on (usually noted in the screenshot or description). Again if this is different for you please comment. Download package size is the size of the RAR file to 2 decimal places, which the amount of files included in the archive in brackets. Program architecture type is a hard one for me, as at times it’s hard to tell – so do not rely on this heavily, as it can be wrong… usually filled in if it’s stated in the ‘Read-Me’ or Help files supplied with the software (TIP: x86 = 32-Bit, x64 = 64-Bit). Operating System is the list of ‘certified’ operating systems that are stated in the software’s documentation, this is defined in italics. If it’s in plain font or surrounded by parentheses, then it’s usually my guess of what it will run on. Lastly Other Requirements is usually a link to a notepad.cc document and is commonly a direct Copy & Paste from the Read-Me.

Last of all is the download link which is usually direct (no ad.fly here, as of yet!). Files can be hosted in various places, I used to use Mediafire – but they kept telling me off for uploading perfectly (in my eyes) legit software – so I’ve changed to 4Shared who I’ve always used without a problem – the odd warez may be hosted at zippyshare. If there is no download link then it’s because its been requested to not be shared. All files are packaged in a .RAR file (packaged using WinRAR), with the highest amount of compression available to ensure small file footprints for those on smaller connections.

I am considering starting a review section on here too, in which will be similar to my first post on Foobar 2000 but this is all down to the time I have spare. And on that note please understand this blog may go quiet for months at a time, it’s not that I’ve run out of stuff to share (collectively I have over 1000 games for you guys!) it’s the time it takes to install each, test it, screenshot it and post it (takes 30-45 minutes for each one) and this is a hobby for me, so I have to juggle it will other more pressing matters.

I also provide other more ‘experimental’ subjects on this blog too including MusicID’s for trailers and documentation/catalogues. But these have a lower priority than the main objective of supplying old software & games.
